Human nature makes us need a hierarchy. Hierarchy means power. Power leads to corruption and abuse, inevitably. But those who have power can be aware of its likelihood for abuse and watch themselves. One cannot prevent it all the time, no, but by being aware, one might manage to prevent it some.
