[For no very specific reason at all, Katara is happy this late afternoon. The air is getting colder, and the very fact that it's nipping at her face is enough to make her smile. Add to that the glorious storm of yesterday, that it is still drizzling...

It's started drizzling as she runs her errands in town, and she puts a hand up to bend an 'umbrella' above her head as she walks along. She forgets herself, though, as she comes to some large puddles in the road, and dropping her hand, stares at them for half a beat.

Well, she's already wet.

So she jumps in. Not bending at all, simply splashing about in the puddles along her way.

Feel free to catch her in this rare display of immaturity and glee - or even join her! Hopefully she won't catch a cold.

Much later, as she prepares dinner for her house, she makes a voice post.]

[She smiles. That's the first time someone's had that reaction before. It makes her happy. Even though Katara grew up in what most people would view as near poverty and a step away from starving the whole time... she thought of her culture as rich.]

We did all right. Especially when the men were there to go whaling. We would use every part of the whale.

That's good.

...Was it all seasonal?

The whaling was. They'd leave right after the ice starts to break up in the spring. Tiger seals migrate too, but sometimes the men would go hunting them if we started to run out. [A quick smile.] The fish never went anywhere. We could even go ice fishing in winter.

[Which is mostly... what they had eaten for the past two years.]

I've done ice fishing.

Really? Where?

Here, actually.

I was taught a while back, though, during a job that actually took me where there was lots of snow and the sun was only up for about four hours a day.

...'Bout froze to death.

[She grins at that.] It sounds like home. That's the hard thing about ice fishing - having to stay still. Did you remember to layer up?

Believe me, they couldn't get me out of the base until I had every sweater I owned on under the coat. Dunno how you 'snow people' do it, really.

You can't just layer one part of you, you know. You have to do the whole thing.

[Grin.] But maybe I'm just used to it.

Well, yeah. But I only had two pairs of pants.

And that, too.

So what were you doing where it was so cold?

...I never told you what I did for a living?

No, I don't remember hearing about that.

...hmn.

I'm a vampire hunter back home.

[A vague recollection sparks...] I think Toph might have mentioned something like that once. Vampires are things that eat blood, right? I think Buffy said something about them once too...

Yeah. People that die from a specific kind of infection, and come back. Only, at least on my world, it's not really them anymore.

They need the blood to keep going. Buffy's a slayer...we have...similar jobs, but she's got a lot of advantages over me, and we've got nothing like her where I come from.

[...she's not exactly sure this is a 'Let's talk about it on a public journal' topic.]

That sounds pretty scary, actually. [Not gonna lie, she's had to face actual monsters in the past month and they were really annoying. And to have someone die and then come back and not really be them anymore? That's horrible. That's worse than dying.]

What kind of infection is it? How do you catch it?

[Other than what's for Buffy to tell about herself, he doesn't have a problem if people listen in on this. Best way, after all, to explain his own condition...without telling anyone he has it. Just in case.]

Two parts to it; the first is viral, like a sickness. The second is...a bit more impossible to explain. It's a sickness of the soul. One that ends with the soul being devoured completely.

You get it by being bitten by a vampire, or getting a scratch that draws blood. At least that's how it works on my world. There's a few other ways, too, but pretty much, it all depends on the infection getting into the victims bloodstream somehow.

...all they have to do is scratch you?

[This infection has gone from 'being a bit scary' to 'straight up horrifying.']

'Fraid so. Gotta be real careful when you're dealing with them.

And you hunt them for your job? ...that sounds really hard, Derek.

Someone has to do it. And I'm one of the ones that know they're there, so.

I can understand that.

Hmn.

So what did you guys do for fun?

...well. When we were little we used to go penguin sledding and have snowball fights.
