[ Action, Accidental Voice ] .032

[For the past almost two weeks, Katara has been struggling to regain her balance - even struggling to want to regain her balance. Aang's second return home hit her hard, on top of Zuko's mallynapping and Toph's return... Toph who doesn't remember. It's good to see her, but it's terrible as well. Now more of them are trapped in this horrible place. And she still hasn't been able get back to wearing her regular clothes because the 'phasing' keeps happening, as randomly and as annoyingly as ever.

It's been almost two weeks since she's returned and her shoulder hasn't been in any pain in days. The experience of having her bending completely taken away in the Malnosso facility was one that's almost beyond words, and now that she's back where she can feel even just half herself again, the desire, the need to bend has been growing under her skin like an itch.

She can't take it anymore. So Katara goes out just after dinner to one of her favorite practicing spots between her house and the barracks, and begins by doing very simple forms that don't require a lot of movement. She pauses when Momo finds her and sits down to take a break.

It's not long before she begins talking to the lemur about their adventures. It feels good - to talk to someone about home, to talk about all the things that happened, to remember who she really was, despite what this place wanted to make her. She doesn't notice when Momo knocks the journal opened when he moves to chase after what could be a fallen nut. ~~He might not be the best listener ever.~~]

--Sokka sent Aang in to steal the book. Remember riding on top of Appa's back so Aang and I could shape the clouds? It was too bad that we had to go through all that just to get them to listen to us. So after we made the skull in the sky, we dragged out Aunt Wu to see it - the sign for volcanic doom. Then the villagers listened. All the earthbenders worked to dig trenches and everyone else grabbed shovels to help out as best as we could.

And then when volcano exploded, we got back as far as we could, but it flowed right through--

[There's some excited chatter by the book, and suddenly the picture is filled with this face. It flickers from voice to video and back again.]

Momo, what are you doing? Get away from that!

[The video shows Katara shooing Momo away from her journal and then automatically shutting it. She gets back to her practicing, but will open up the journal later and see that it accidentally recorded. Way to go, Momo.]

[Toph did not mention this. Katara is somewhat skeptical. And amused.]

...Dirt! But there was a worm in it!

[...yup, still vaguely amused. But she does feel bad. Poor Masaomi. Toph shouldn't be so casually cruel... although, you know, she is only twelve.]

Yeah, that does sound pretty gross. But you survived it, right?

[Katara makes a note to talk with Toph about him later. 'Not excessively creepy, just odd.']

Eeeh~ So it seems! [He shrugs dramatically here]

[Pause. OK. Time to give him fair warning.]

She's only twelve, you know.

That doesn't stop her from being lovely, Katara~ I might not be a lolicon, but I can appreciate the beauty of all girls.

[He nods to himself!] A fate meeting in four years, maybe?

...but she kind of thinks it would be good for Toph to hear that she's pretty, as long as she doesn't take it as creepy harassment. So she's not going to push the issue.]

Toph is very pretty, yes. She's also the best earthbender I've ever seen.

[So watch yourself.]

Eeeh... of course, that's an amazing talent she has. so that's strong for a bender?

You were buried in the ground and then you walked out without a scratch, right? That takes a lot of control, and I guarantee you that Toph didn't even have to think to do it. She's got a tremendous instinctive and disciplined connection with her element.

Yeah... ["I had wondered about that." But that's left unsaid. He nods here, because that confirms what he was thinking about. With something as extreme as that, the fact that it was so non lethal was the amazing thing. He honestly thought he might die until he was buried]

[Katara's conscience is a burden. Her amusement fades and there's nothing but sincerity in her voice.] I am sorry if it scared you.

[After all, for all she knows Kida is a total noncombatant.] Toph uses her bending for a lot of things - that's just the way she is. But she wouldn't have hurt you.

[...Pfft] You don't need to apologize, Katara, it's fine. I wasn't hurt, after all!

[Heh.] Well. Good.

[Aaand that conversation's dead, so.] Waterbending is pretty different than earthbending, but some of the same principles hold true.

[Control, for example.] So when you want to come and see, just let me know, all right?

As soon as you feel up to it I'd love to see it, Kara~ta!!

All right, maybe when I - [There is a thump. The journal is suddenly on the floor. If the picture still points at Katara at all, it shows that you can suddenly see right through her.]

UGH!

[And then she continues as if nothing had happened, although she is standing very, very still.]

[...That was odd. Something was definitely odd and his tone drops a little]

[When she solidifies, she picks up the journal again.]

Sorry about that. [Pause.] It's just - the after-effects. It won't last for too long. So, I'll let you know?

[And so, Tuesday, because Monday Katara was exhausted from healing San, Kida will come across a filtered message in the evening.]

Hey, Masaomi! If you're free tonight, I'm going out to practice now.

[This is after Mikado shows up and Anri is gone. Not sure how to feel, really... and then this. His voice is more subdued than it could be but he tries to sound happy when-]

Aahh~? Where should I meet you?

[She's an expert on that 'tries to sound happy' tone, but - she doesn't really know him well enough to know for sure. So her voice is a little questioning, but... she doesn't bring it up.]

By my house? I usually practice between there and the barracks. ...Or we could meet by the river, if you'd rather.
