[Action, Accidental to Purposeful Voice] .033

[Well, Sokka was his Avatar alternate again. That alone is enough to call for some alone time, but with the news he brought... she definitely needed some time to clear her head. Fortunately, there is a public service she can easily perform. If your house is still snowed in? There is a waterbender digging you out. For about half the day, she is her normal self.

...sometime around two, though, she starts feeling lightheaded. Realizing she'd unintentionally skipped lunch, she heads back towards the center of town. As she walks, she starts feeling heavier and heavier. Something's wrong. Katara reaches for her journal to call for help, but it's too little, too late. She falls face first into a snowbank, the journal falling opened beside her.

When she opens her eyes, her hair is blocking her vision. Longer and unbound... her clothes feel almost painfully tight across the chest and she gasps a little.]

What? Where am I? [A deep breath, and slightly louder, as if she's expecting a response:] Aang?

[Sitting up, she shakes her head, one hand going to her waterskin... and that's when she notices the wings. Her eyes go wide.]

Is this... I had dreams like this...

[Standing up, the picture shows her body at an angle. She's certainly grown. After glancing around a bit, she reaches down to pick up the journal.] I remember... this... feels too strange not to be real...

Hello? I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, but... I'm Katara. I think I remember this place... and a girl with reddish hair and... what were they called? Not oranges... something else. And there was someone - a man - with white hair and he went "Oooh?" a lot... and I remember... cigarettes and cooking and... [So many, many more. Fragments of a dream - a man who stretched his face, a skeleton playing music, a reindeer that danced... an ice dragon... green hair and white hair in front of a classroom and... shadows, dreams, fragments of things... flying people and conversations over tea and a wolfgirl and so, so much that only made sense in dreams...] And -- I don't know. Does this make any sense?

[But even as she's talking she's starting to walk. These clothes are too small - it looks like she's on a path. Let's see where it takes her.]

[There's a little boy watching the clouds somewhere outside of the Avatar house. There actually are clouds today, much to his delight. Bother?]

[This lady looks... kinda familiar. Honestly, Shikamaru has about given up on keeping track of anyone that isn't from his own world by this point. But he'll humor this person for now - adults get funny when you ignore them.]

That one looks like a fish. [Not pointing. There's no fun in it unless you look for yourself!]

[She glances up and nods.] And that one looks like a turtleduck.

[Blink.

...] What's a turtleduck?

Ooooh, your world doesn't have turtleducks?

I don't think so. I'd probably remember something like that.

What about badgermoles? That one looks sort of like a badgermole.

[Is she teasing the poor kid on her lawn? ...maybe a little.]

Tch. It sounds like you're making stuff up to me.

[He doesn't sound like he really cares if that's the case, but judging by the way he turns his head back to the clouds to look for what she might be talking about, he is curious.]

No, I'm not. Badgermoles are very real, I've seen them a few times. They were the first earthbenders.

[Does Katara know how to bait a hook or what?

Meanwhile, she tilts her head back to the sky as if she hadn't a care in the world.]

And what's an earthbender s'posed to be?

Well an earthbender is something like a waterbender... except with earth. [She extends a hand up and moves it about in a strange and waving motion and it seems as if the cloud so far above them? Begins to slowly and slowly resemble a bit more of a 'badgermole' shape.] And badgermoles? Are huge. They live deep, deep underground, underneath mountain ranges, where they make tunnels.

[Waterbending makes a little more sense... That's what Katara does, right? He watches the cloud in an odd concentration, watching the form it slowly seems to take.]

Do they work with earthbenders? 'Cause there's a kid in my school named Kiba. He has a puppy that's learning how to be a ninja too.

They worked with the very first human earthbenders, yes. They taught them how to do it. But in my time? I only know one who was lucky enough to learn from them.

So they're a little different from nin-dogs then. More like teachers. [He doesn't quite understand it, but he seems to have enough of an idea about it that he's satisfied.]

Mmm, maybe. But they don't hold school.

That makes them cool teachers.

[She laughs at that.] I guess so.

So... what's your name?

Nara Shikamaru. [Of the Nara Clan, he would say, but he's beginning to understand that clans don't mean much here.]

Shadows. She remembers that. Oh, somehow she remembers that clearly

...he's so cute and tiny. No wonder he's on her lawn.]

[Blink. And then he tilts his head back over to look at her.

She does... kinda look like Katara. There's recognition, and then he frowns.] How troublesome. How come no one can stay the same age around here?

Because the people who are keeping us here have a lousy sense of humor.

[And with that, she makes herself comfortable on the lawn beside him for a little while.]

[Another muttered 'troublesome'.] But you remember stuff then?

[If you're talking about the Malnosso people he's heard about, he figures she might.]

I knew you when you were older.

[Innnnnteresting.] I don't remember being older. Chouji was older than me when I first got here though. [So maybe it happened.]
