[Raine was right. A draft had come, this one worse than before - and in a place where she could be more useful than any other location. And she wasn't going.

She took a good long look at that list. And there are some people that she has to visit.

...okay, there are a lot of people she has to visit.

First stop - Shikamaru and Chouji's place. If she can't go herself, then she has to do what she can to help the people who are going out out, and that means talking with the strategist going out there who she trusts.

Next stop - Casa de Freedom Fighter. She may have put it off if her talk with Shikamaru hadn't made her realize how absolutely necessary this was.

From there... spirits, so many people... Katara takes out her journal and stares at it a bit before making a general voice post and then crafting some filters.]

If anyone - needs me for anything, or if there's anything I can do to help out before you go, I'm around. I've fought in swamps before, and although I don't know anything more about this one, I'll try to answer what I can.

[And now it's time for filters. She doesn't have anything specific to say to these people, not over the journals anyway, so the message is the same.]

[Oh, here he goes.

Katara's smile turns wry, almost expectant. But she doesn't make any movement to pull her hand back just yet.]

Think of what?

[He slaps a hand - the free hand - on his forehead and shakes his head, looking "distraught"]

We could have agreed for a reward if I did?! Maybe even a kiss?!

[She blushes in spite of herself, in spite of almost expecting - something. At most she'd thought he'd have said a date again. She was ready to deal with that. A kiss was... more. And she wasn't expecting that at all.

So she voices her protest:] Masaomi!

[And withdraws her hand. The smile from before is still hiding, however, at the very corners of her mouth.]

[He just laughs as her reaction, pulling back his hand as well. If it's not genuine, it's up to his standards of faking so it's close enough. A kiss with her... he had a few phantom memories of them, but they have since faded. Now he simply has an awareness that he might have in that AU but... they never did]

[She crosses her arms and huffs.] Jerk.

[Although... she is glad of his joking, and it shows when she glances over at him from the side of her eyes and shakes her head with a little smirk.] You just don't give up, do you.

[He shrugs here, easy and such. He shitsh is position so he can lean his back into one of the supports for the rail of the bridge]

Now could I have up on a girl as splendid as Katara?

[Pfff. And she makes a scoffing noise as she moves around to see him better. Promise extracted, Katara's okay with just sitting there for a moment in relative peace before moving back to unpleasant topics.]

[As silences go - and Masaomi does not like silence - this is a fairly good one. It lasts almost four seconds before he can't take it and makes a light tutting sound before shaking his head. He doesn't have more to say but saying nothing is freaking him out]

[Well, that derails her from what she'd been about to say. She looks at him curiously.]

What is it?

-Nothing.

[Really, it is. Just the silence is bad]

[She waits a moment, and when nothing more is forthcoming, nods.]

Okay. So... [how to approach this topic] ...have you talked to Mikado yet?

[He glances over at her now, carefully. ...And here we go]

Mm. Yeah.

Is he going to stay with the camp?

Of course he is!

[He actually snaps as he says this, losing his cool a bit]

[Katara frowns, not intimidated or stung by Masaomi snapping. She's just not sure where she should go from this - asking how he'll handle it seems to call his promise into question, and she doesn't want to do that.]

Okay, good. I didn't know for sure if he had any fighting experience.

He doesn't - of course he doesn't. Mikado can't even perform in gym class.

[Darkly, his anger is rising, and he shifts his gaze to glare at the river]

[Katara is not sure what 'gym class' is but she does get the general idea. Her voice is a touch more gentle than normal, but still firm as she reminds him-]

I didn't think you could fight either, until you showed me.

[So it's a perfectly reasonable question.]

Mikado isn't... Mikado's not like me.

[He's not broken. He's not a loser. He wouldn't freeze in that situation - hell, he'd never be a big enough dumbass to put his girlfriend in that position in the first place]

[Katara glances at him sidelong - hesitates. Somehow she doesn't think he's talking about being a fighter. It's in the way he's still not looking at her.]

Not like you? What do you mean?

[... He hesitates a long moment. He considers if he can tell her or if he can't. But he can't... no. He can't. She's very important to him now and he wishes he could, but right now he cannot do it

So then, lamely]

...He can't fight.

[This is a beat of silence when Katara gives him a chance to say more, to turn around, to do anything other than just sit there like that...

...and then the beat stretches a minute, as Katara hesistates, deciding whether or not to push.

She reaches for his shoulder again, keeps the touch light.]

Masaomi?

[At least look at me. This isn't like you.

...this is deeper than the draft, isn't it.]

[He flinches there, but then... relaxes to the touch and nods to himself. No, he's not going to tell her- he can't... no. But it's obvious, isn't it? What even is he hesitating about?]

[...]

You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but this is deeper than the draft, isn't it.

...Ah. A little bit, yeah.

[And now, steeling himself, he finally turns to her, trying to keep his expression even]

[Katara drops her hand when he turns to her, as their sitting side-by-side makes that... awkward.]

You don't have to tell me. But sometimes talking about it helps.

[And to be fair, she doesn't even throw in the wibbly eyes. Her gaze instead is calm, concerned, and doing its utmost to convey 'I'm here.']
