[Sometime early this afternoon, Katara escapes from the house with no particular destination in mind. All she knows is that Zuko is finally well enough to be left alone, and even if he's not Roku - Roku - is around so he's not exactly unprotected.

But between Zuko, Roku, Jet... and the imminent battle with Aku... Katara desperately needs some time to clear her head. And just as importantly - this is her first spring. When they'd left the South Pole with Aang, the world was already in bloom. This is the first time she's actually gotten to see blossoms on trees or fields of budding flowers, and even though the Easter Egg hunt gave her some time to explore, she just can't get enough of it. It's a thousand new sounds and smells, and the thunderstorm has left the sky freshly washed and the blossoms are bright against the green.

She is not headed anywhere in particular, although she has a vague notion of checking in on Tanyuu, she's not sure where Ginko's friend has settled. So after wandering around the borders of the forest and any other place where there may be flowers, and lying down in a field and staring up at the clouds for a while, Katara will head back into town. Once there, she'll poke around the town square for a bit... and decide to explore some of the community houses, because she's only been in there once before and they seem to have mysteriously... grown.

And this is how she ends up on the roof of Community Building 4, leaning on the edge with her journal in her lap and a smile on her face.]

Tanyuu, if you'd like to meet somewhere for tea or something, I'd like to see how you're settling in.

Right. Because you never got to see me fail at waterbending. [You know. For most of our lives? She shakes her head.] How many have you got now?

[Well, guess there's no reason to hold back. Hopefully she won't ask him which ones he's working on.]

I've got two I'm good at. I just made a pact with one... and me and a friend are still working on another one.

[You are being weird about this, Sokka. Usually you can't wait to talk about what you've worked on and what you've done. Until she can figure out how to approach this she... is just going to touch your shoulder to make sure she has your attention and charge on in.]

Weird? I'm not being weird. It's not a big deal. Just something to do, right?

...sure. Whatever. [She drops her hand. Yup. Really, really weird. Time for that awkward moment in a conversation where she stares out at the square and tries to think of which direction to take it.]

Hey, check this out. [He coughs and clears hi throat, looks around, and spots some birds on the ground poking around for food.

And his mouth starts moving, but nothing comes out. Or does it? Those birds suddenly scatter from what seems to be a noise over there.]

[And she laughs.] Nice! What one is that?

Kipinn. Its got nothing on Airbending... but there's a few tricks you can do with it that Aang isn't able to pull off. Sound manipulation being one of them.

All right, I'll admit it - that's pretty sweet. [And after turning over the possibilities in her head...] Does it work in reverse too?

You mean could I project your voice to somewhere less distracting during your lectures? Believe me. I'm working on it.

I don't lecture! Anything I say is purely for your own good -- or because you are driving me crazy! And besides, that's not what I meant at all.

Right. Of course you don't lecture.

So what did you mean?

[Arms cross.] I don't know if I should bother asking, since you'd probably never use it anyway.

[Groan.] Oh come on. What is it?

[Hmph. She steals some more chips.]

If you can bend sound towards, can you bend sound away? Like... hear people if they're talking from a distance?

[Polishing off the last of that sandwich.]

Not sure. From what I've learned, with enough practice, you can even create sound. But that... I'm not so sure. You'd have to... manipulate the air in such a way that it can carry the sound over, like a kind of pipeline. I guess it would be the same concept as those communication pipes the Fire Nation used in their ships.

[She shrugs. She's not worked with the wind spirit whatshisname, so she has no idea if that's how it works or not.]

OK. But I bet it would work, if you tried it.

I'll be sure to practice it next time you're trying to have a private conversation.

[She sighs and sets her elbows on her knees, leaning forward.]

Yeah... I know. [And regardless of what Jet might be, his presence makes things complicated in more than one way.]

[She's... got nothing to say to that. She doesn't know how things work here or how they should or - anything. Or if escaping, if death, would be better than staying here. People come and go all the time and Rydia had been here for two years already and... and...

Katara looks down.]

... either way, we'll have to do something if he tries to cause trouble for Zuko and Roku.

I know. [Pause.] Hopefully he's smarter than that. We have different worries here.
