[Utter doom has managed to hold itself off for the past week, and so today is Katara's first day of school! She's excited and a little nervous, since she's never been to any sort of school before. While preparing and lecturing herself she jostles her journal.]

--vous about. It's going to be just fine. Now where did I put that -- oh. [Someone's just noticed her journal's opened.] Man. I'll be late! [And she shuts the book quickly, not noticing what was recorded and starts on her way.

Of course, her nerves aren't helped by the fact that she hardly slept at all last night. Her room still smells faintly of ash, and the memories that scent triggers aren't pleasant. The nightmares are old ones, and the one she had last night one that she remembered. It had her up in the middle of the night, practicing in their back yard until exhausted.

She's almost tempted to just stay in bed all day, but she told Raine she'd be trying to go to school soon and doesn't want to go back on that. So there she goes, to and from school. So if you're at the school today? Expect a wide-eyed new girl. And if you're anywhere in the center of town after that, expect a slightly dazed one, trying to remember what she has to pick up in the grocery store.]

All right. [And so Katara will just take a seat. And hopefully not fall asleep while she waits.]

[It shouldn't take too long for others to arrive. And once an attendance sheet is passed around and a general plan set up - for people to partner up into groups of two or three and do some quiet practical exercises, she'll motion for Katara to come with her.]

[And so Katara gets up and follows Raine out of the room.]

[She'll lead her down the hall to a smaller, empty room, and gestures for Katara to take a seat, while Raine heads to the larger desk to retrieve paper and a pencil.] Have a seat, and just take your time. It's a placement test, so I can see where your skills are and assign your classes accordingly.

[Katara nods.] Okay.

[Is she feeling a bit nervous and jumpy? Why yes, yes she is. At least in a battlefield she knows her place... she has no idea what she's supposed to be living up to here.]

[Action]

[wise_maiden]

[She gives her a small smile, hoping that will be reassuring, as she hands her the test, scrap paper, and pencil.] Don't worry about not understanding some things. I've tried my best to gather universal concepts between worlds, but obviously it's not going to be perfect.

[Yup! That's fine. We're all just fiiiiiiiiine here.] All right. What kind of tests are they?

You'll see; it's just standard things, like reading and writing comprehension, problem solving, samples of various levels of mathematical skill, and the like.

Again, the point is not to worry if there's a concept you don't understand. You can leave me a note there if it's something you wish to go over.

[Katara nods. Just a general assessment to see how she measures up against entire other worlds. Right. Nothing to worry about here. Now if only her eyes would stay open, everything would be good!]

[That's not exactly it, but Raine will come in periodically and check on her progress.]

[And so Katara attacks the placement tests. She does well on the reading comprehension and the basic math questions, though word problems prove to be a bit of a challenge. She doesn't know any algebra, so she has to try to figure things out a backwards sort of way. It takes a long time on the ones that it does work on, and on the ones that it doesn't she just sort of... stares at. Not willing to give up, but unable to immediately figure out an answer to the question means she's faced with the choice of just leaving them blank and asking for help, but then again she'd been able to figure out some of them, why not all? She doesn't even glance at the higher forms of mathematics, knowing that she'd never learned them, but the word problems...]
