Hey, Hugo - if you have a chance, I'd like to talk to you about something.

[And then she shuts the book and moves to her evening practice session behind her house. Today is not about how much water she can move, but it is about control. When the wind blows her journal opened, anyone watching can see thin streams of water moving quick enough to cut intertwining with her arms and legs as she works through a form. The pattern of when she splits a stream, and when she adds more water seems random... until you glance above her head. Any time her concentration is broken by a flash of an image, she adds another and another until all the thought bubble reflects are the forms

If you want to interrupt her, give her a minute - messing up and slicing herself with one of those water streams would be painful. While she normally hates to have her practicing interrupted, tonight it's not quite keeping her mind off of things.]

[Oh, right. She would have seen the dragon. That'll be fun to explain.] That's Hyourinmaru. A manifestation of my sword's spirit. A partner in battle, you could say. [Hello, oversimplification. Ah, well. The dragon likes to think he's a mysterious thing anyway.]

That's your waterbending, then?

[Blink, blink. So she'll just be trying to assimilate that while staring at your thought bubble. So - that's how he fights? And he was up against some weird-looking woman who also used water...]

Uh... yeah. Some of it. [Pause. And she tears her gaze away from the thought bubble to look at him.] You want to ask any of the rest of that out loud?

[He glances at the thought bubble, then at her, and resists the almost overwhelming urge to pinch the bridge of his nose. He's this close to hiding in his apartment until the damn bubble disappears.]

Only if you want to answer them.

[She looks up at the bubble, and then looks at him, and then back up at the bubble before smiling a little.]

I don't mind talking about my bending if you don't mind telling me more about that battle and how you fight.

[He's ignoring all that, simply because if he looks at her or the bubble, he's just going to sigh in resignation.]

All right then. [He nods towards the buckets.] Can you pull water from the air or do you need water available already?

[Well, he gets straight to the point. This isn't something that she's made very public, but Hitsugaya doesn't exactly strike her as the talkative type... and it's something that she's learned that Sona can do, so she'll just... answer his question.]

I can only work with what water is available. There's some water in the atmosphere, but it's not enough to do the type of bending that you saw me doing here.

[He nods. Makes sense. He feels a little awkward, asking such questions, but it's for the greater good. (And, yes, his curiosity is the greater good.)]

What kind of defense are you capable of?

[She tilts her head.]

What does Hyourinmaru have to do with your fighting?

[He raises a brow. A question for a question, was it? Well, fair's fair.]

Hyourinmaru is both a partner and a weapon. In short, I control the ice he creates.

So you use ice to fight. As well as your sword?

Water is a very adaptable element.

[Dryly.]

Yes. I know. That doesn't answer the question.

((Yes, I know. Excuse me if I'm just not comfortable spelling out all my strengths and weaknesses to a stranger.))

Then you'd know that there are a number of ways I can use it for defense. One of the most common ways in battle is to use it like a shield. Or I can coat my body with it, and change the density of it as necessary - it's very absorbent.

[Thought bubbles might actually come in handy.] It's curiosity. You keep telling me you can't win against certain people here. I haven't met them and I doubt I'll have a chance to just ask them what they're capable of. I know what you can do and I have a better idea of what they can do.

Water's a little more malleable than ice. Hyourinmaru's mostly offensive. [He shrugs a shoulder.] Doesn't mean he can't be used for other things, with a little creativity.

[She crosses her arms.] It's not my powers that are the problem - it's theirs. Aku, for instance, hides his wings inside his skin to eliminate any obvious weak points. He can take on the shape of anything, and split himself into - I've seen up to fifty multiples, each as strong as before. He absorbs water, and fire, and swords. He shoots fire-like lasers from his eyes, and breathes fire. He's unnaturally strong and fast.

((The supernaturally fast kick that cracked her ribs displays in the thought bubble for a moment.))

[He scowls at both the description and at the image that flashed in her thought bubble. That didn't sound like anyone he really wanted to cross.]

Even so, it's best to know what people are capable of.

[Well, she's not arguing there.]

Water makes a better shield when it comes to most fire or force than ice. It's more adaptable, and easier to redirect the blow. Ice works well if you're trying to slow something down, but it won't stop concentrated lightning or fire attacks. But with a water shield, you can grab onto it and force it in a different direction.

[She's right. Not that he's really admitting it. He does concede the point though.]

Hyourinmaru's ice is mostly offensive. If need be, it can be used for defense, but I've other ways to defend myself.

[She stares at the thought bubble.] ((Oooh, those are pretty wings.))

I saw what you did before - when I almost attacked you. It was magic, wasn't it? Some sort of near-invisible shield?

[He's blinking at her, nonplussed, while these thoughts are nicely and prominently displayed.]

We call it kidou. There's three types: defensive or binding, offensive, and healing. Few shinigami are proficient in all three types.

[She nods.] That makes sense. From what I've been able to learn, the different kinds of magic can be very complicated. It would almost be like trying to master another form of bending.

Can you fly with those wings?

A few shinigami are well-versed in all the types of kidou.

[Pause. Damn bubble. And if there's a hard edge to his voice, he's ignoring it.] Not here in Luceti. Some of my power's been capped; I haven't been able to do that with Hyourinmaru since I've come here.

[Katara nods. She couldn't help but see his thoughts... but she's not going to ask about them. They were private and obviously painful - although she's not exactly sure what they reflect. But she chooses to discard them and focus on what she can judge for herself - thoughts did not always accurately reflect a situation. Her voice is rather deliberately steady.]

All of our powers are capped here. There are even places here where you can go that eliminate your powers completely.
