[ Voice, Action ] .017

[It's the second day of a heatwave, and it's amazing how little things like weather can drive man-eating butterflies, flying trees of burning pointy doom, and missing friends from a Southern Watertibe girl's mind. ...OK, maybe not that last one, but she's feeling this heat in her bones, man, and it's driven her to put on her Fire Nation outfit and just lounge around, trying not to think about the horrible things she's seen week... which of course makes her think about the horrible things she's seen everywhere.

But the best way to get rid of bad memories is to think about good ones... and when that fails, make them.

And so, Katara Has An Idea. She grabs her brother, he agrees, and they make their way to the center of the square and set up a table. It's laden with fruits and sugars and stacks of glasses.

A little bit of waterbending later? And that fountain is now completely iced over, meant to resemble one of their 'Great Wonders of the World', an ice oasis in the middle of the desert.

When they're all set up, Katara makes a voice entry.]

Hey, everyone! Come on to the fountain for free fruit slushies!

[Feel free to come upon them on any part of the process, stop by for a slushie, or take a look at the pretty ice-fountain! Either Sokka, Katara or (eventually, as I have to run out right now) both will answer!]

I'm actually building them for the whole village to use. If you want to borrow one, you just have to ask.

[How disappointing. And... common. And how about his drink? The service here is terrible.]

[Ah of course. His drink. Sokka will just finish that up and slide it over.]

Why do you need to have your own boat? ... and do you even know how?

[...Well, no, he's never made a boat before. He had people for that sort of thing. But it's just a little stream, how hard can it be?]

Why should we not have our own boat?

Well, no reason, I guess. Seems kind of pointless given I have two that you can use anytime...

[Still not an impressive one.]

Perhaps I don't wish to ask permission every time I travel that way.

Okay, how about this. I have the material behind my house. If you guys wanna drop by and work on one, I'll help you two out. Just as long as you're willing to let people borrow yours.

[...That sort of defeats the purpose of having his own boat so he doesn't have to share it with people.]

[Taking twice as long to get out to the wilderness to fight a crazed maniac because you've lent your boat to someone isn't really the convenience he was going for, sorry.]

Hn. [Looking Katara's way. Perhaps he will go ask the attractive young lady about her fountain freezing technique. He has a little social left in him today.]

[Well, if he wants to say hi she's over there, sitting by the fountain. Her hands are propped behind her and she's leaning back towards the ice because - oh man, feels so good.]

[Now that he's not melting out of his armor... Chin up, shoulders back, and- march. He needs to look properly heroic after all. He stops a short distance away from her - doesn't want to get in her space.]

Can you tell me how you did this?

[Katara pops open one eye. Oh look, movable shade! She scoots a little more to the side to be further into his shadow.]

I'm a waterbender. My name is Katara - I don't think I got your name.

[He dips his chin politely and respectfully. He doesn't mind being her sunshade for the time being.] I am called Sigmund.

...Are waterbenders a form of mage in your world?

...if 'mages' are magic users, then not really. Bending and magic are two different things in my world. Bending is used for combat and what 'magic' I've seen was things like fortune-telling, or tricks for children.

And you use 'bending' to gain control of elements?

[He thinks he gets this. Kind of. Still looks pretty curious.]

Basically. In my world there are four elements, water, earth, air, and fire. Only the Avatar can master all four elements, but there are benders for each element.

[Sorry, Katara, he's going to kneel. It might disrupt the shade a bit.]

Your work is impressive. Is everyone capable of bending, or is it a special talent?

[~~Aww, man. Shade!~~ Katara is taken aback. Your question is a good one, but first things first - what the heck?]

Uh - you can sit next to me by the fountain if you want.

[...He was already standing there and the ground is just fine? This is some sort of weird social thing, isn't it? But she's looking at him funny, so he gets up and sits next to her. He looks defiantly unruffled about the misunderstanding.]

[...OK, now that was much less weird. She scoots over so he can have some more room.] It's a public fountain. And it feels good to have the ice at your back.

[Alright, the chill does feel good, even if he did grow up in a tropical forest. And she's being very kind to him, so he's somewhat encouraged.]

[Katara shrugs a little.] Not if you don't mind answering some back. We're all from so many different worlds - I think it's good to compare, and learn about each other.

Plus, it's interesting.

My world is [...profoundly messed up, for starters] uninteresting, but if you are curious, I will answer.

Heh - I'm sure your world probably only seems uninteresting to you. It's your home, after all.

[She reaches a hand down to where some of the ice has turned to water and starts idly playing with it, not quite bending, just making shapes with her fingers in the water. It's freezing cold and feels good.] You first. What were your questions?
