[Stirring awake, the first thing she notices is that it's cold -- and it's not cold in the fire nation. Glancing up and around there are snowflakes all around her... and no one in her group.] Aang? Sokka? Toph?

Where are my clothes? [Shuddering, she rubs her arms together.]

[Time to get a little louder now, stomping around, and where is the fire and why is she in a forest?] Toph? Aang? Sokka!? This isn't funny!

Ow! What? What is this? [The sound of turning pages. She'll close it and start looking around in a minute for some shelter and her friends, not necessarily in that order. This Southern Watertribe girl is not about to get frostbite in some strange forest just because she woke up in weird clothes with no shoes.]

Right! Could you describe any peculiar landmarks where you are? The forest can look the same after a while, but there has to be something distinctly unique.

There's a sort of... yellowish toadstool. And one of the trees has a crack down the middle of it. Here, wait, I have an idea. [There's snow falling all around -- perfect material for a little bending.] You could look for a large ice column.

[And she starts pulling water to do it -- and it's a lot harder than it should be, and that confuses her a lot but she's not going to say anything. After a few minutes there's a tall, thin flagpole of ice for him to look for.]

A large ice column? Okay.

Hey, Kata -- you look cold!

[And off comes the top of the ice flagpole to hover above her hand in a bubble. Just in case.]

Of course I'm cold, it's freezing out -- you have wings!

Well, yeah, everybody here has -- How are you doing that!?

I'm a waterbender. It's just -- what I do. What do you mean everyone here has wings?

You . . . bend water? As in, you manipulate it? I don't know much about the details, but we all have wings, regardless of whether we had them before or not.

[Twisting her head behind her she turns to confirm his words -- and sure enough. Wings. She drops the water in shock. Gaah!

[Tries tugging on her wings.] Ow! What is going on? How did this -- [OK. Deep breath. Squares her shoulders.] It doesn't matter. We have to get out of here before we both freeze.

I don't think tugging on it is such a good idea. And that would be a good idea. Let's see if I can remember how I came . . .

Do you want it? To keep yourself warmer.

[Suddenly aware that she wearing not so much] Um. That would be really great. That's very kind of you. Thanks.

We should head to the river. My brother was talking to me through the book, and he said it would lead us to the village.

Your brother is here? I suppose we'll follow his directions, in that case.

Thank you. [Since ripping Tormod's cape to make moccasins seems rude, she'll just wrap that around her shoulders.]

He and my friend Toph will meet us there. Just give me a minute... [Closing her eyes, Katara concentrates to feel which direction the river is. It's harder than it should be and it takes her a minute.] It's that way.

[Have a nod, and a brow furrow, because this is taking work and something this simple should be like breathing.] Yeah. I've always been able to know where water is.

Nah. This is my first time hearing of benders. If it's similar to magic, we have mages where I'm from.

Magic, the power granted to us by nature and its spirits. The three elements are fire, thunder, and wind. There's no water magic as far as I know . . . I'm a fire mage, myself, though I can use the other two as well.

Magic... wait, three elements. [Sorry, I think you might have broke her for a minute. She's just going to stop and stare at you.] And you can use all of them?

Yeah, for elemental magic. Of course! 'Cept I need a tome for each one. I can also use staves to heal.

[Katara has decided that there is something wrong with your head or your world, she's not sure which] That's... really different. Where I'm... from [She can't bring herself to say 'world'] there are four elements. Water. Earth. Wind. Fire. Only the Avatar can master all four elements.

[But even if he is crazy, he's nice and they both still need to get out of the forest, so she'll just keep walking now.]

What are 'staves?'

In that case, does that mean you can only wield water?

A staff's a rod of sorts that we use to heal others. The stronger your magic, the more efficient you'll be at both fighting and healing. It gets handy down the road!

That's right. And my friend Toph can bend earth. And Aang, well. He's the last of the airbenders.

Oh, well. That makes sense, I guess. Even at home the stronger your bending the more you can do.

...how do you use a rod to do healing?

Earth and -- air? With Aang being the last of the airbenders, are they rare or something?

Our skills are similar in that case. You practice, you get better, and you can blast away your enemies and support your companions.

It's sorta simple. You wave the staff around, say a few words in the Old Tongue, and bam. Healing.

Well, now they are. The Fire Nation... you said you were primarily a fire bend-- mage? And you use fire to support your companions... even to heal?

Hm? Yeah. I use fire to toast my foes and apply staves to heal wounds. . . . Does it have something to do with this Fire Nation?
