[ Action ] .044

[Should you be passing by the bridge between the clinic and the Item Shop on this fine, finally-a-break-from-the-heat afternoon, you will notice that there has been a certain change in the landscape. A large wall, seemingly made out of one solid chunk of earth has appeared by the riverbank and painted white. At varying points in the day there may also be some spheres, pyramids, inverted pyramids appearing beside the wall... and that white wall is on its way to becoming multicolored.

There by the wall is a large sheet and on it rest pretty much every container of water-soluble paint found in the Item Shop, mainly strong primary colors. There are balloons and small buckets and bowls, and just about everything you could want in order to throw paint at a white wall.

Random passerby, what do you do? Continue on your way and hope not to get splashed with mud, water, or paint? Stop to wonder at this strange work of 'art?' Or if you don't mind getting your hands dirty, there does seem to be more than enough paint...]

[Fenimore thinks it's still a little weird, but still not weird enough to really impact things. ...Well, not most of the time, at least.]

Paint thingy? [Then she hears the splash.] ...She's throwing paint at it?

[Toph nods.] Pretty much! She's got the waterbending advantage. But I think it'd be more fun to use hands, anyway.

So it's more for fun rather than being a community art project, huh? Is it just the two of you?

[...Community art project?] Nope, it's just about having fun, brought to you completely by me and Katara.

So, you getting messy, or what?

[She doesn't reply immediately. Is that really worth getting her clothes covered in paint? Her distaste for technology means that she has to do the laundry by hand, too. She looks down at what she's wearing.]

[And then she looks back up with a grin. She didn't really care for this dress, anyway, and the leftover effect of spending that event as Toph's little sister is that she feels free to be a little silly around her.]

I'll pick messy over what. [Coming over now!]

Sweet! Make something awesome, and if you want to try a different shaped wall, that can be arranged!

[She grins.]

I can't say I've tried working with these kinds of shapes before -- you'd be the expert on that one!

[Let's see. How to approach this? ...Toph did say to use her hands, so she's going to dunk one hand in a blue bucket and one in a green bucket and proceed to smear these hands along the nearest part of the wall. She's really not thinking about how she'll be able to change colours later.]

[While she paints, Toph will continue creating shapes out of earth, getting more and more abstract as she goes. One of them looks remarkably like Appa, in fact.]

I'd ask what your favorite color is, but colors don't exactly do it for me, ya know.

[She turns her head towards Toph as she starts crossing and uncrossing her arms to send the lines crossing one another.] Why wou -- ?

[Then she remembers from that event about Toph's blindness and her arms slow in their path.] Oh.

[But, attempting to avoid awkward, she tries to just push ahead in conversation and turn back to painting the wall.] You -- you're doing pretty well with shape, though!

Well, duh! I can see shapes with my bending. My feet see for me. [It occurs to her that she probably never explained this to her before, however. So Fenimore can have a non-sarcastic explanation.]

I feel the vibrations in the earth around me. I can see things a lot more clearly than most regular people, actually.

[It would probably have taken Fenimore a while to absorb the explaination if it had not been for the time as Toph's little sister, where this had been accepted as normal.

So, instead, she just nods...and then pauses.] Even if I nod? [Does it work that high off the ground?]

[Toph grins.] You bet. I can pinpoint physical changes in people, too, so I can usually tell if they're lying. Earthbending's a great lie detector!

[Unless you're Azula.]

All that from the earth? [Okay, going to be very careful which topics come up around Toph.... In the meantime, she'll be refreshing the paint on her hands and swinging them to splatter across the wall.]

Yup. You'd be surprised how sharp your other senses get when one of them isn't there.

[This is her theory, anyway. While Fenimore paints, Toph continues to bend smaller shapes into the ground at her feet--a miniature grove of trees, a turtle duck, Appa...]

I think this is a little more of a special case than most.

[She's kind of stopped painting by this point and instead staring at the shapes. They're really impressive.]

Well, yeah. I am the best earthbender in the whole world, after all.

[She could do the whole city of Ba Sing Se, too, but she doesn't want to create a huge hole in the middle of Katara's paint shindig. Some other time.]

In the whole world, huh?

[Her tone implies that she thinks this must be an exaggeration, though given what she's seeing and the kinds of people she's met in Luceti, she wouldn't be surprised if this isn't much of an exaggeration if it is.]

Yep! You better believe it. I learned from the badger-moles, after all.

[She says this as if it's the most ordinary thing in the world. Because everyone had badger-moles where they came from, surely.]

Badger...moles...?

[It's entirely possible that Fenimore's world doesn't even have one or the other, but it is certain that she doesn't have the combination.]

[A puzzled looks drops onto Toph's face.] Y'know, big hair creatures, long tails, claws? Blind as a bat? ...They lived near my house.

[It doesn't sound like any creatures she knows of, but from the general description:] You learned this from monsters?

[Hey, that makes it sounded even cooler than it is!]

Yeah, sure did! They're the best teachers around.

How did you manage that?
